Oranje calls for participants

Oranje has announced its 10th annual exhibition of contemporary art and progressive music. Oranje 2011 will take place Sept. 17.

Oranje invites all artists and musicians interested in participating in the event to submit examples of their work for consideration. 

Organizers describe Oranje as a contemporary and progressive event seeking modern musicians and artists in an extremely wide variety of media.

It is also a juried event, therefore only a limited number of artists and music performers submitting work will be selected to participate.

Participants are required to be 21 years and older and provide valid identification to participate. Oranje will accept submissions beginning April 1, through May 31.

All submissions for Oranje must be submitted via its web site, www.oranjeindy.com.

Garfield Conservatory and Gardens events

Garden Days – April 9: Attend a brief garden lesson and then practice your skills by helping out in the garden. Expand your gardening knowledge while giving back to the park. The topic for the month: “The Great Perennial Divide.” This event is free.

Spring Bulb Show – March 25-April 1: Come see a display of tulips, daffodils and other spring blooms weeks before they blossom outdoors. Bulbs will be for sale April 2 at 10 a.m. Special admission fees apply.

Botanical Inspirations – March 31, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Use basic painting supplies and your imagination to capture the beauty of plants in the Conservatory. Registration is required by March 28 and cost to attend this event is $5.

First Friday at the Stutz

The Stutz Artists’ Association will have its First Friday open artist’s studio on April 1 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Stutz Business Center, 212 W. 10th St.

Visitors can see more than three dozen artists at work.

Behind the scenes IMAX tours

Officials at the IMAX Theater in the Indiana State Museum will open its “back lot” for Reel Life: IMAX Behind the Scenes.

The general public is invited to this limited run of special tours of the Downtown IMAX only – giving theater-goers a chance to personally discover the amazement of giant screen productions.

Pre-registered visitors will explore where and how 3D movies come to life as they are immersed in the magic of the movies. They will be led into the projection booth to check out the magnanimous size of 3D reels and see how technology brings flat film to life.

The tours conclude with the viewing of a 3D hit on the giant screen.

“Reel Life: IMAX Behind the Scenes” will be March 30 and 31 and on April 1, 4, 5 and 6.

Indians to open season April 7

The boys of summer are ready to swing into action.

The Indianapolis Indians’ season opener is April 7 against the Columbus Clippers. The opener will include a fireworks show following the game and a 2011 Indians schedule magnet giveaway to the first 5,000 fans.

The Indians have “guaranteed” a game-time temperature of at least 60 degrees. If it’s not, everyone at the game receives a free ticket to another April home game. The popular Monday Dollar menu returns with $1 hot dogs, peanuts, Cracker Jacks, popcorn and potato chips.

Tito Jackson to release first solo album

Fresh off two 80K+ sold-out performances this winter, Tito Jackson is poised to release his first-ever solo album, “So Far So Good,” this summer. 

The last of nine Jackson siblings to parlay the legendary family name into a solo career with “So Far So Good,” Tito Jackson already holds the distinction of being an inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for his work as a member of the Jackson 5. A father of three – Taj, Taryll, and TJ, known to the music world as 3T.

Cynthia Layne at Jazz Kitchen

Celebrate the Jazz Kitchen’s 17th anniversary with vocalist Cynthia Layne for two sets on April 2 at a and 10 p.m. Tickets are $10.

She will perform with her band consisting of Kenny Phelps on drums, Reggie Bishop on piano, and Rob Dixon on the saxophone.

Layne will perform cuts from her latest CD, “Beautiful Love + Reality.”

‘Annie Get Your Gun’ at B&B

Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s will present “Annie Get Your Gun.” The live theater show opens March 31 and will continue with performances running through May 8.

“Annie Get Your Gun” is the comedic story of the skilled shooter Annie Oakley, who aims to be the star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

Tickets range in price from $36 to $59 and include a buffet dinner.
