Family member wants death penalty in murders of 7

More by this author

A family member is pushing for prosecutors to seek the death penalty against the man accused of being the main triggerman in an Indianapolis home invasion in which three children and four adults were killed.

Janie Covarrubias held a news conference Wednesday in front of the burned-out house where the murders took place in 2006.

Covarrubias says she didn’t believe in the death penalty until she saw photos of the crime scene, the victims and the autopsy.

Marion County prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty for Desmond Turner until last month, when they announced a deal to drop it in exchange for Turner waiving his right to a jury trial. Turner still could face life in prison without parole if convicted.

The prosecutor’s office says family members approved the deal.
