A fun new flavor of comedy is coming to Mass Ave. Second Saturdays: Storytelling, Comedy, Music gives Hoosiers the chance to enjoy a night of music, beer and creative storytelling while supporting adult literacy in central Indiana. At this event, a special guest will tell true stories and local comedians will improvise funny scenes. We spoke with Meredith Hylton of Indy Reads books to learn more about Second Saturdays.

Recorder: What inspired you to launch Second Saturdays?
Hylton: One of our retail associates came to us from out in California, and he was actually managing an improvcomedy theater out there. He helped produce a show with a live storyteller, and based on suggestions from the audience they spontaneously tell a story that inspires the improv comedy show that follows. We said, āWhy not try it out here as a fundraiser for our literacy organization.ā We would love to create a series; this is the first one and we want to try a second. I was like, āYes, letās bring something new tothe avenue and make this store relevant.ā We want to get the word out about our programming by having a fun event.
Ā
Can you tell me more about your literacy and language proficiency programs?
Indy Reads Books is a nonprofit bookstore, which is pretty neat. We are a program of Indy Reads, a nonprofit adult and family literacy organization that provides free literacy classes for adults in central Indiana. Our bookstore is all based on community donations from people who bring in used books.
Ā
What can people who come out to Second Saturdays expect to experience?
This event starts a little bit before the store closes. You can come in, it will be a seated thing, and we will have a guest storyteller. The audience will be asked to give a suggestion, and the storyteller will tell a story. Trained comedy theater people will come on stage and do a comedy show. Afterwards, Sun King has graciously donated beer to help with fundraising. We will have a DJ on site who will play fun house tracks, and there will be time to mingle with people in the community. Our dream is to make it every second Saturday.Ā
Ā
What do you hope people who come to Second Saturdays learn about Indy Reads?
I hope that people see that Indy Reads Books is trying to draw the community in, be relevant in the community and to get that message out in a fun way.Ā
