Butler to close Jordan Academy of Dance
Butler University’s the Jordan Academy of Dance, which has trained young dancers in Indianapolis since 1909, will close on May 31, due to economic reasons.
Despite efforts to increase enrollment and boost revenue, the Jordan Academy of Dance is not a sustainable program and Butler University can no longer afford to subsidize the operation.
The decision does not affect Butler’s renowned dance program, which still flourishes.
More than 200 students ages 3-17 currently take lessons at the Jordan Academy. The academy employs two full-time employees and six hourly workers.
IMA to exhibit works of Japanese artist
The Indianapolis Museum of Art will present the first large-scale exhibition of works by Tawara Yusaku, a contemporary Japanese artist known for his highly energetic brushstroke.
“Universe Is Flux: The Art of Tawara Yusaku,” on view from Nov. 11, 2011, to April 1, 2012, will feature works inspired by Tawara’s belief that the universe is unstable and constantly changing. Executed in ink on paper, his works use the cumulative effect of many brushstrokes to create powerful and expressive works, apparent in even his smallest 3 inch x 5 inch paintings. Although Tawara eschewed representational art, many of his paintings recall traditional ink landscapes or other forms in nature.
