“She exuberates lots of energy and personality that are most definitely required for a mid-day show. Her presence leaped out from her demo and made my decision very easy,” said Rayne, radio personality and program director for WNOU-FM Radio Now (100.9).

Reka Robinson, has hit the airwaves and is one of the newest members to the Radio-One family, WNOU-FM Radio Now (100.9).

As an energetic, outgoing child, it was destined that Robinson have a future in the media. The Seattle native’s parents wanted to harness all of her energy by keeping her busy. From dance class to gabbing in the halls, by high school Robinson was already bitten by the entertainment bug.

“I had every Seventeen Magazine, I could tell you who Aaliyah was dating, I knew everything,” said Robinson. “For some reason entertainment seeps into my soul and it’s easy for me to spew it out.”

Robinson parlayed her love for entertainment by obtaining a degree in TV production from the historic Howard University while doing radio on the side. She received positive feedback and knew radio was a direction she wanted to take.

Although the 25-year-old has only been on the radio in Indianapolis for several weeks, she’s been enjoying spinning songs like “Love in this Club” by Usher, “Take a Bow” by Rihanna and “Damaged” by Danity Kane.

Robinson doesn’t just play songs but allows her listeners to get to know her better through her creativity. Weekly, the “streets diva” does a segment called “Back in the Day Buffet” where she takes a trip down memory lane recalling highlights of a chosen year in history. “Reka’s Pick” puts new singles to the test by listeners, and then there’s the “Topic of the Day.”

“I think the best personalities are those that listeners get to know. My listeners know now that I’m scared of thunderstorms and that I miss my Sonics; it’s those human connections that people love. I bring my actual real life over the airwaves,” said Robinson.

“She’s not afraid to be opinionated and can make the most out of her show,” added Rayne. “She has a presence that seems to jump out to the listener, which is an important trait to have. Most radio personalities can’t pull that off, Reka can.”

While she may be the only Black radio personality at Radio Now thus far, Robinson chooses not to be the “token Black girl.” Instead she chooses to bond with her listeners through her explosive personality, enjoy her new home, and play the hits.

“Minus the thunderstorms or tornado warnings, I love Indianapolis, I’m happy to be here,” jokes Robinson.

You can hear Reka weekdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on WNOU-FM Radio Now (100.9). You can also check her out weekdays on IMC-TV “Indy’s Music Channel” hosting “Drive Time” from 6-7 a.m.
