Have you ever met the Honorable Sen. La Keisha Jackson? ‘The people’s champion’

Have you ever met the Honorable State Senator La Keisha Jackson? Those who know her work understand why she has earned the reputation of being “the people’s champion.”

Jackson’s leadership is rooted in compassion. She does not simply talk about the needs of the community; she works to address them. For 25 years, she has served through community programs, business, public policy and as a nonprofit CEO, helping individuals and families gain access to resources that can improve their quality of life.

Her work reaches people across generations. She has supported seniors, youth, and families in need of transportation, affordable housing, employment, food and other essential services. Through summer programming, Jackson has helped create employment opportunities while also providing young people with structure, guidance and meaningful experiences.

Her commitment to children is especially evident during the back-to-school season. She understands that students need more than notebooks and pencils. Families may also need clothing, hygiene essentials, and other necessities that are rarely discussed publicly. Jackson works to help meet those needs because she does not want anyone to be forgotten or allowed to fall between the cracks.

Before entering the Indiana Senate, Jackson served for 10 years on the Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Council. She was elected to represent Senate District 34 in April 2024 following the passing of her predecessor. Her journey to the Senate was not the beginning of her service. It was an extension of work she had already been doing throughout Indianapolis for many years.

Jackson now serves as Senate Democratic assistant caucus leader, ranking minority member of the Local Government and Environmental Affairs committees, and treasurer of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus.

Her recent accomplishments demonstrate her commitment to continuing to learn and grow as a public servant. On July 21, Jackson completed the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development. She was among 39 select lawmakers chosen from 11 Midwestern states and four Canadian provinces to participate in the nonpartisan leadership program.

She also completed the State Legislative Leaders Foundation Melissa Hortman Emerging Leaders Program at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.

These accomplishments add to a long list of recognition. On Jan. 19, 2024, Jackson received the President Biden Lifetime Achievement Award for her service and advocacy. She has also received two Mayor’s Community Service Awards.

Although the certificates and awards are significant, they are not what define her. Her compassion defines her. Her consistency defines her. Her willingness to show up for people defines her.

Jackson is a Georgia native who moved to Indianapolis in 1984 and grew up on the Far Eastside of Indianapolis. She has lived in Warren Township since 2000. Her faith plays an important role in her life and leadership. Her love for God aligns with her love and work for people. For Jackson, being a public servant is not simply a position. It is a responsibility.

As she continues her first term in the Senate, Jackson wants the public to know more than her title. She wants people to know her heart, her commitment to the community and her desire to remain accessible to those she serves.

She believes we are here to love and support one another. That belief can be seen in the way she approaches policy, community service and leadership.

Sen. La Keisha Jackson is more than an elected official. She is a woman whose life’s work has been dedicated to helping people, connecting resources and ensuring that underserved residents are seen, heard and supported.

That is why she is known as the people’s champion.
