Filmmakers worked overtime the latter part of 2011 to bring exciting and fresh movies to the big screen. One of the reasons is to ensure that the titles are on the ballots for the Golden Globes and Oscars, but also to grab the attention of enthusiastic moviegoers who are willing to spend their holiday dollars at the box office.

Below are must see movies of 2011 that are currently in theaters.

“The Artist”

Rated PG-13, 100 minutes

A French romance film that takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932. It focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film itself is a silent film and shot in black-and-white. The film has received wide praise from critics and many accolades. The film has six Golden Globe nominations, the most of 2011.

“The Adventures of Tintin”

Rated PG, 107 minutes

“The Adventures of Tintin” is a 3D film based on The Adventures of Tintin, a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Remi). Directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson the film is based on three of the original comic books: The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), and Red Rackham’s Treasure (1944). It is also the first animated film Spielberg has directed.

 

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

Rated R, 158 minutes

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an award-winning crime novel by Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. It is the first book in the trilogy known as the “Millennium series.” The film with the same name centers around journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) who is aided by Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a young computer hacker, in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years.

“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”

Rated PG-13, 133 minutes

The fourth installment in the “Mission: Impossible” series. It stars Tom Cruise, who reprises his role of IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, and is director Brad Bird’s first live-action film. It is the first “Mission: Impossible” film not produced by Paula Wagner, and the first of the series to be partially filmed using IMAX cameras.

“The Descendants”

Rated R, 115 minutes

A comedy/drama where a land baron tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident. It has received great reviews from critics.

“My Week With Marilyn”

Rated R, 99 minutes

Based on two books by Colin Clark, it depicts the making of the 1957 film “The Prince and the Showgirl,” which starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. The film focuses on the week in which Monroe spent time being escorted around Britain by Clark after her husband, Arthur Miller left the country.
