The Indiana Civil Rights Commission will lead more than 50 Indianapolis residents, and more than half a dozen local organizations, in the Third Annual Dr. King Day of Service Jan. 17, 2014 at the Watkins Park Family Center in Indianapolis. The event looks to honor Dr. Martin Luther Kingās legacy by increasing economic opportunities through service and volunteer activities.
āAs the need for service continues to grow, we take time to honor Dr. King by giving back and making an impact on our local community,ā said Jamal Smith, the executive director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. āThroughout the year, we are seeing Hoosiers use the power of service to strengthen their own and each otherās economic security and making a real difference in our local communities.ā
The Third Annual Dr. King Day of Service will include indoor and outdoor projects along Dr. King Street and Edgemont Avenue. There will also be work done at the Naval Armory in preparation for the Northwest Area Quality of Life Plan Visionary Summit on Jan. 18, 2014. The Quality of Life Plan (QOL) is developed by citizens that live, work, worship and play in a specific area or community.
āAs more families and communities need assistance, we are accepting the challenge put forth by Dr. King to make a difference,ā added Smith. āThrough the efforts of our volunteers and partnering organizations we are working to revitalize Dr. King Street one project at a time. Our work with a local business incubator is especially exciting as we have the opportunity to make an economic impact on the local economy in addition to improving the appearance of the neighborhood.ā
The Indiana Civil Rights Commission enforces the Indiana civil rights laws and provides education and services to the public in an effort to ensure equal opportunity for all Hoosiers and visitors to the State of Indiana.
