In celebration of Mardi Gras, Indianapolis City Market is hosting its inaugural “Market Gras! Gumbo Cook Off” celebration with 10 of the area’s most talented chefs competing in a gumbo culinary showdown on March 4 from 5 p.m until 9 p.m.
Gumbo is a traditional Creole dish with Louisiana roots that typically consists of a strongly flavored stock, stewed meat or seafood (or both), and thickened with a roux and okra.
Participating chefs are encouraged to prepare a traditional gumbo with their own special twist to wow guests. Each gumbo will be accompanied by a slice of fresh French bread provided by City Market’s resident French patisserie Circle City Sweets. Circle City Sweets will also have beignets, a French pastry made with deep-fried choux paste made famous in New Orleans, available for purchase.
Market Gras! is an all ages, family-friendly event on the mezzanine level of the Indianapolis City Market main Market House on Fat Tuesday. A limited number of $30 adult and $15 youth (12 and under) tickets are available and include servings from all 10 participating establishments and one complimentary beer for all 21+ guests courtesy of the Tomlinson Tap Room.
Tickets can be purchased at marketgras.brownpapertickets.com.
