Jazz In Unexpected Places

More by this author

The Indianapolis Zoo has combined music with mammals, amphibians, birds, fish and all other things wild to create a unique and fun experience.

The Indiana Members Credit Union presents “Animals and All That Jazz.” The concert series kicks off July 10 and runs through Aug. 14. Concerts take place every Thursday from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

On those nights the Zoo has extended hours where patrons will be able to enjoy animals and rides until 7 p.m. in addition to other zoo activities and a cash bar. Each concert will feature themed food stations with a variety of delicious fare for purchase. For adult guests, there will be free beer sampling courtesy of Sun King Brewery.

“The event is family oriented so if families wanted to spend the day at the zoo up until the time of the concert that can be one option,” said Melanie Laurendine, public relations specialist at the Indianapolis Zoo on patrons getting the most bang for their buck. “Another option is to visit indianapoliszoo.com to purchase a package. The earlier you buy, the cheaper tickets will be. If families bring a Dean’s milk jug they will receive a $2 off.”

The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will kick off the series followed by vocalist Cynthia Layne; vocalists Janiece Jaffe and DaVida; Latin group Direct Contact; pop, R&B and soul band Blair Clark; and the Bayou-based ensemble, the Red Hot Whisky Sippers, will end the series by taking jazz lovers on a trip down to New Orleans.

In addition to great jazz, the new International Orangutan Center will serve as the backdrop in the middle of Zoo grounds. Picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-serve bases and lawn chairs are welcome. The threat of weather will simply move the festivities under the Zoo Party Pavilion at the front of the Zoo.
