Mimi Blue Meatballs offers serious comfort food

More by this author

Spaghetti is one of my dear husband’s favorite foods. Typically, I quickly throw the ground turkey, veggies and homemade sauce (yes, I make my own sauce!) into a pot and let it simmer, while I do a load of laundry or some other household task before dinner.

But every once in a while, I’ll take the time to make meatballs.

I’m not really a jealous person, but I recently realized I probably will never take my husband to Mimi Blue Meatballs on Mass Ave. because he just might like their meatball recipe more than mine.

I learned about this restaurant in my usual fashion: randomly fishing around on the web. I was pleased to find the restaurant is located on an increasingly trendy, yet “road less traveled” part of Mass Ave. Inside, I discovered the casually sexy décor.

A host greeted me and seated me at the bar. Upon learning it was my first visit, he began to explain the menu. Once I turned off my inner monologue and began listening, I discovered I could customize my meal. I could get three identical meatballs with a sauce (you can get this with bread too, if you’d like); four meatballs of my choice with any sauce; or a meatball sandwich with either a baguette or a pretzel bun.

The decision is tough, because Mimi Blue Meatballs offers four kinds of meat: classic beef and sausage; turkey; veggie; and beef. They also offer “The Blue Ball Special” a creative culinary experience. The eatery also has five kinds of sauces: marinara; garlic cream; spicy Bolognese; mushroom gravy; and spicy cilantro.

Wait— there’s more. You can also put your meatballs and sauce of choice on top of items such as linguine, white beans, mac and queso or vegetables.

After hearing the latest special I immediately ordered it. Mimi Blue Meatballs has concocted a turkey meatball with bleu cheese and celery, rolled in a light panko breading and cooked. They then douse the meatball in a super spicy Sriracha honey glaze.

I also wanted to try something a bit more standard so I ordered the classic beef and sausage and added marinara atop a bed of creamy polenta.

Once the meatballs arrived, I was pleased to see their hearty size.

I sampled the weekly special meatball first and was blown away. Its honey Sriracha glaze opened my sinuses up a bit. I then tasted the turkey meat, the celery, and the bleu cheese had a nice finish to the bite. I moved on to the next item. The classic meatball lives up to its name. I was glad I boldly ordered the meatball over polenta. It added an extra layer of comfort to the dish, yet didn’t overpower the star of the plate.

My meal was about $11. Mimi Blue Meatballs also offers various drinks and coffees; wine; craft beer; and dessert. They’ll even cater your next event.

I was glad I grabbed the special on the last day it was being offered, because it truly showed how the restaurant flexes their culinary skills. The classic meatball made me want to curl up in a blanket and take a nap.

Mimi Blue Meatballs is definitely worth visiting. I’ll certainly be back. Hmmm. Maybe I’ll even take my husband.
