Summer is the perfect time to experiment with fresh smoothies and fruit juices. During the past three months, I’ve found some of my favorite smoothie mixes at my local grocer, but I’d been dying to try a place dedicated to juices and smoothies on Massachusetts Avenue called Natural Born Juicers.
I first discovered Natural Born Juicers at a natural hair event in the city, where the mobile truck was serving up tasty drinks. Upon visiting the website, I also discovered the popular destination had its own brick and mortar location.
Before my visit, I did a little web stalking to find the business offered more than 15 juices, 15 smoothies and 13 blended juices. I knew from the menu this was the place for me.
After leaving a morning meeting downtown, I plugged the address location into my phone, and a few minutes later found myself not in front of Natural Born Juicers, but in front of Crimson Tate, a place for lovers of fabric, patterns and sewing. I couldn’t figure it out, and still haven’t figured out why my GPS led me to the wrong location. In short, if you have an Android phone, don’t let Google Maps discourage you from visiting Natural Born Juicers. After a two-minute walk, I found the business just below an apartment complex nearby.
As I walked in, an employee greeted me before I asked, “What’s good in here? Give me your best.” After the worker explained to me all of their ingredients were fresh and created without High Pressure Processing, which causes minimal changes in the fresh characteristics of foods, I knew I was in the right place. I gazed over the colorful chalkboard menu for several minutes before deciding on The Jam, a “Crew Creation” blended juice made with peaches, strawberries, mint, apples and a hint of lime.
I said a silent prayer as I swiped my credit card, hoping the juice was appetizing. Trust me — I’ve had a few horrible concoctions in my day, and I didn’t want to add The Jam to my list.
The employee who took my order slid on a pair of gloves, whipped out a couple of peaches and began slicing. Next to him I spotted big leafy greens, over a foot in length, used to make juices and smoothies. I thought, “Finally, here is a place that practices what they preach.” Too many times I find “fresh smoothie” businesses pumping high fructose corn syrup and other additives into their mixes while omitting fruit altogether.
For those with no interest in juice or smoothies, a tall shelf to the left of the entrance may be intriguing. There, customers can find raw honey, extra-virgin coconut oil, herbs and all-natural and organic soaps.
Natural Born Juicers also has three individually tailored juice cleansing programs, and juices can be ordered in bulk.
I received my order in a 12-ounce cup about five minutes after ordering. The color was similar to that of a peach, and the drink was very, very good! It was so good, in fact, I drank the entire juice during my 10-minute ride to the office. The Jam and Natural Born Juicers definitely get the stamp of approval!
