If you mention the name Gary Brackett to someone, most people would recognize him as the talented and articulate linebacker who claimed a Super Bowl ring during his time with the Indianapolis Colts.
Dig a little deeper and you find a man who is currently using the prosperity he earned in the NFL to make a difference in the lives of many who are less fortunate and in need of our help, right here in our community, with his Impact Foundation.
I had the pleasure of visiting Brackett recently as he opened up his stylish home to some generous individuals who had purchased the evening with him at a recent fundraiser that benefited his foundation. While some of their conversations involved football, the bulk of the dialogue shared among those in attendance pertained to Brackett’s continual quest to help others in this region and beyond through the various programs he personally oversees in his work.
Inspired by the health struggles and subsequent death of his beloved brother Gregory, Brackett determined in 2007 it was time for him to compose a way to give back to the community by making an impact in the lives of children who were chronically ill.
As his foundation grew, he began to provide resources and support to what he terms under-served and at-risk youth and their families. It also focuses on developing job skills for those aged 15-24.
āI have truly been blessed in my life and recognize the opportunity I have to assist those in need,ā stated the modest Brackett, as he shared dessert with his guests. He went on to say it really doesn’t take a lot of effort for anyone to make an impact, and that he is truly fortunate to have his foundation supported by many who have, in his words, āstepped upā while sharing the same passion and dreams that he does.
This particular evening allowed those who had contributed to the Impact Foundation at any earlier event to tour Brackett’s home, enjoy a superbly prepared gourmet dinner and even play a couple of rounds of friendly poker after dinner with their gracious host.
The affable former Indianapolis Colt is just as tenacious about his foundation as he was as a player on the field during his NFL career, but he is quick to tell anyone who will listen that this work is far more important than football. Quietly and significantly, Gary Brackett is clearly making an impact, and you can learn more about joining him at garybrackett.org.
