Hoosier leads prayer for House of Representatives

Tuesday, U.S. Congressman Andre Carson welcomed fellow Hoosier Rev. Dr. Anthony K.R. Gibson, presiding elder of the Indiana Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and former pastor of the Saint Mark Temple AME Zion Church in Indianapolis, as guest chaplain for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Since 1789, the House has been served by chaplains of various religious denominations. Currently, the position is held by Rev. Patrick J. Conroy, who serves as the 60th chaplain of the House of Representatives.

Each Congress, Representatives have the opportunity to recommend a guest chaplain from their district to visit the U.S. Capitol and offer an opening prayer. Carson invited Gibson to be his guest for this Congress.

“I am pleased that my House colleagues have a chance to experience the Hoosier love and guidance that Rev. Dr. Gibson will share as the House tries to complete the people’s business this week,” said Carson. “I thank him for his willingness to travel to Washington and lead the House of Representatives in prayer as guest chaplain.”

Gibson was born in Gary, Indiana. He later attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where he completed a double major in journalism and African-American studies. He furthered his education at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary and earned a doctor of philosophy in theology from Trinity Bible College and Seminary.
