Civically speaking

More by this author

Is it really possible to disagree without being disagreeable?

Civic Saturdays will put that theory to the test when people from all walks of life come together to discuss “the inherent tensions and competing values that exist in American democracy,” according to the press release.

“This time of civic fellowship aims to give people of differing perspectives a chance to discuss their civic and political values, while also practicing the art of listening,” the press release continued.

It’s sure to be a lively one-hour discussion.

“This country is founded on a lot of high ideals that we have yet to live up to,” said Erin Kelley, Spirit and Place program director and Civic Saturdays discussion facilitator. “It’s not enough to have words on paper. You’ve got to make it real. It’s OK to disagree. We should disagree when it comes to policy. We should disagree when it comes to politics. We’ve got to come up with new ways to see each other as citizens.”

Civic Saturdays are part of an initiative through Citizen University, based in Seattle, designed to foster a national dialogue to create informed and empowered Americans. Kelley was one of several people chosen nationwide to become a fellow. She received training on how to conduct discussions about American’s duty to be responsible citizens. To ensure an interesting conversation, attendees are encouraged to bring a friend with a differing viewpoint. In addition to discussing the topic at hand, Civic Saturdays also include poetry, song and a civic sermon. That’s a lot to pack into one hour.

“It is a nice tight, concise program,” Kelley said.
