Use the power of one for greater good

More by this author

What goes around comes around.

We’ve all heard this saying, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if we actually internalized its meaning and based most of our life’s decisions on such a statement.

Think about it; if more of us realized that the things we do (the good and the bad) will somehow make its way back to us, we’d probably be a kinder, more generous society.

Many of the times when people do bad things to others, it’s often a form of retaliation. When a person commits such an act, it may also be because they fail to acknowledge, or care about the consequences of their actions.

As I sit back and think of some of the heinous crimes that have been committed, the terrible forms of brutality that many people have been subjected to, or even rude behavior that is exhibited throughout ones’ day I realize that all of this could quite possibly be eliminated if a person remembers that things have a way of turning full circle.

What goes around does indeed come around so if you’re the type of person who exudes negativity, then negativity is what you’ll get. On the other hand if a person is very kind and generous, then that person is more likely to have kindness exhibited towards them.

The thing about karma is that even if we as individuals try to “forget” or “deny” some of our less-kind deeds, there’s always a higher power who realizes everything that we do. In my life I consider that higher power to be God. My God not only knows the things I do (both the good and the not-so-good), but he also knows my heart and true intentions. I’m a firm believer that God will hold me accountable for all of my actions (yes — the good and the bad). No one wants to intentionally experience pain, hurt or any other type of negative repercussion so the best thing to do is to be kind to all people and respect them as fellow human beings.

We are currently living in a very dangerous and scary world. On the 10 p.m. news reports it is not uncommon to learn of the shooting death of a neighborhood friend, a father vigorously shaking his infant child, the excessive drug usage in our country or other developments that may be far worse. The fact that things such as homicides, child abuse or drug usage are now “normal” news segments is a problem within itself. We’re growing immune to unacceptable behavior and that’s unfortunate because the more immune we grow, the more tolerant we become of such actions. When we become tolerant, we’re less likely to institute a positive change in behavior. Because many of us are so numb to the way of today’s world, I’m pleading with everyone to be individually responsible for yourself and your actions by understanding that what goes around eventually comes back around. Perhaps if more of us realize this, we’ll be more likely not to engage in bad behavior or exercise retaliatory actions.

While the numeral one is a small number, it holds a lot of power and strength. One person can change the mindset of countless others by leading by example. One person can truly make a difference in this bizarre world. One person has the power to evoke change amongst the masses. I encourage you to use the power of one to work with others who are trying to make a positive difference in this world.
