Trump one year later

More by this author

This month marks the one-year anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration. It’s been a troubling start for our president. Over the last year, the President has used the highest office in the land to sow partisan division, rather than bringing critical help to the American people. The President and his cabinet full of billionaires, bankers, and CEOs have failed to take meaningful action on a wide array of critical national priorities — from creating jobs to repairing crumbling infrastructure to promoting health for all Americans. The recent government shutdown is just the latest example of how extreme policies and a failure to make tough choices are disrupting progress for those who need it.

Since the president was sworn into office, his administration has been clouded by controversy and an inability to produce results for the American people. This includes:

Failing to create jobs: President Trump claimed he would be the greatest jobs president God ever created, yet his budget would slash investments that create jobs and opportunities. He has yet to propose his long-promised infrastructure plan, instead focusing on corporate tax cuts that are more likely to result in dividends and executive pay than support for job creation.

Failing the middle class: President Trump said he would fight for working families, yet the tax bill he just signed into law raises taxes on middle class families to fund tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

Failing to protect public health: President Trump spent of most of the year attempting to repeal the Affordable Care Act, kicking an estimated 24 million off their health insurance. His tax bill repealed the individual mandate, promising massive premium increases for the public. And most recently, he refused calls to fund community health centers that serve low-income families.

Failing to stand up to foreign tyrants: President Trump sided with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, criticizing the U.S. intelligence community for their claims that Russia interfered in our election. He continues to obstruct our investigation into what happened and the level of Russian influence in his administration.

You sent me to Congress to get things done, and that’s why I will keep pushing the President and the Republican Majority in Congress to get serious about the issues you care about. As President Trump enters his second year in office, I will continue fighting to protect our rights and democratic institutions. To faithfully represent the American people, President Trump cannot govern alone. He must put forward unifying proposals and work across the aisle to help those in need.
