Vacation Bible School keeps kids connected to church through summer

More by this author

A lot of attention is paid to making sure kids continue to learn over the summer and retain information learned in school, but summer break is also a time when many churches schedule Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs to boost kids’ opportunities for spiritual education.

The earliest iteration of VBS has been traced back to an 1890s school in Illinois, where a teacher, stressed about fitting enough Bible education into the school year, organized daily Bible school lessons throughout the summer.

These days, VBS programs — many of which are geared toward elementary-aged children — vary in length and specifics, but include lessons in Bible stories in addition to other fun activities involving music, theater, athletics, arts and crafts and more.

Here is a list of just some of the local churches with VBS programs on the summer calendar:

ā–  Castleton United Methodist Church

ā–  Citadel Missionary Baptist Church

ā–  New Beginnings Fellowship Church

ā–  New Way Community Church

ā–  St. Luke’s United Methodist Church

Contact a church near you for specific details about this summer’s upcoming VBS programs.
