Award winning barbecue at Judge’s

More by this author

With the summer of 2011 now a memory and the abrupt arrival of colder temperatures, barbecue may not be on the priority list of food for some people.

Judge’s “Tip of the Rib” Barbecue, however, has a selection of items and an atmosphere that is fulfilling during all seasons.

The family-owned restaurant is located in the Haughville area on the city’s near Westside, not far from downtown. It was opened by Judge Smith, who formed the business after serving honorably in the U.S. Army.

Smith, his family and staff have become known among happy customers and local restaurant critics for their attention to the details of service and commitment to quality in every item they prepare. Since 2007 Judge’s has been ranked first place among local barbecue establishments by the Indychannel.com, which is operated by WRTV-TV Channel 6.

Over the years, Judge’s has become a popular stop for those who work and study nearby at places like Wishard (now Eskenazi) and the IUPUI campus. What is it that keeps them coming back again and again?

For one thing, just looking at the restaurant’s menu can entice you. I’m not saying it’s unique or innovative; it’s just that everything sounds so good that deciding what to order is not easy.

Judge’s has a variety of smoked barbecue favorites such as ribs, rib tips, beef brisket, chicken wings, pulled pork, smoked salmon and barbecued meatloaf.

Also popular are the restaurant’s sandwiches, which come in varieties such as brisket, smoked ham and turkey and rib eye steak.

A particular favorite of mine is the barbecue burger, which is cooked just right and comes with lettuce, tomato, cheese, onions and of course, Judge’s signature barbecue sauce, which has a pleasing combination of hickory smoke, tangy and sweetness. Fortunately, this sauce is available for purchase if you enjoy cooking on your own.

Judge’s ribs and rib tips are also a choice selection because they are always tender and meaty, without a lot of fat.

The side items make a key difference in overall satisfaction of the meal and there are plenty to choose from: cole slaw, corn casserole, greens, green beans, mac and cheese, cheesy fries, potato salad, roasted sweet potatoes and (for those who have a guilt trip about eating healthy (a garden salad).

If you have any room left, feel free to treat yourself to one of the assorted flavors of the cakes, cheesecakes, cobblers or pies.

Judge’s also has a nice Friday buffet, a fruit smoothie bar and catering for any event.

The only gripe I (and many otherwise happy customers) have is Judge’s hours: It closes at 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 p.m. on Friday, and is not open on the weekend. I understand some restaurants (such as Chick-fil-A) close on Sunday for religious reasons or just plain rest, but Judge’s could generate a greater profit from joyous customers if it were open on Saturday.

Normally, when it is time to see someone with the word “Judge” in their name, it is uncertain whether or not the encounter will end up in your favor.

When you visit Judge’s Barbecue, however, you can expect a favorable and satisfying experience.
