Indiana members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will gather at the Indiana Statehouse from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 25 for AKA Day at the Indiana State Capitol.

The event provides members the opportunity to meet with state legislators, participate in policy discussions and advocate for issues impacting their communities.

This year, the focus will be on voter mobilization, education and key policy matters affecting Black and Brown communities across Indiana. Attendees will discuss proposed legislation, meet with local legislators and explore ways to enhance civic engagement. Additionally, members will engage in a letter-writing campaign and address issues related to education, health care and economic opportunities for Black and Brown Hoosiers.

Alexandra Hall, Indiana State Coordinator for Connection and Social Action, anticipates more than 200 members from across the state will attend.

“As an organization committed to advocacy and service, Alpha Kappa Alpha recognizes the power of civic engagement,” Hall said. “Our members dedicate themselves to ensuring that elected officials hear our voices at every level of government. We are here to advocate for policies that strengthen our communities and empower future generations.”

The day’s agenda includes a networking breakfast at 9 a.m., a legislative briefing and a meet-and-greet with Divine Nine fraternity and sorority members in the Indiana General Assembly. At 1:10 p.m., attendees will gather for a solidarity photo, followed by a live legislative session observation at 1:30 p.m.

Kiahna W. Davis, central region director, emphasized the importance of remaining active in the legislative process.

“We must remain active in the legislative process, educating ourselves and others, mobilizing our communities, and holding our representatives accountable,” Davis said. “The Central Region Connection and Social Action Committee is committed to advocating for change and ensuring our voices shape policies affecting families throughout Indiana and beyond.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has a rich history of social action, beginning in 1915 with its first political action conference with Illinois Congressman Martin B. Madden. The Indiana chapters are part of the Central Region, which includes over 8,000 members across Illinois, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Missouri.
