Statehouse Market returns

More by this author

May 23 is the date for the return of the Statehouse Market, a weekly collection of Indiana produce vendors and 10 of the area’s favorite food trucks, with an eye toward providing downtown workers an alternative to their lunch and dinner plans.

Covering 20 dates from May through early October, this year’s version of the Statehouse Market, brought to you by the Indiana State Personnel Department, is expanded from last year’s very popular edition. This year’s market will include a weekly rotation from more than 40 food trucks, plus farmers from around Indiana on hand to sell locally-raised and grown products such as pork, vegetables, fruits, dairy products and more.

Each Thursday beginning on the 23rd, the market will take place on the west side of the State House, near the intersection of Senate Avenue and Robert D. Orr Plaza. Vendors will be open for business from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Visitors can buy both lunch and products to take home.

“The Statehouse Market is an opportunity for a group of Indiana farmers to market their products, and a good dining and shopping opportunity for people in the downtown Indianapolis area,” said Gina Sheets, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. “I look forward both to shopping there and enjoying the nice outdoor event the State Personnel Department always puts on.”

The market is part of SPD’s Invest in Your Health program, which encourages wellness and preventative health practices among the approximately 12,000 state employees in the downtown Indianapolis area. The Indiana Dietetics Association, INShape Indiana and other state agencies will have information tables set up weekly to educate shoppers and answer questions.
