Insight Development Corp., the development arm of the Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA), will officially break ground next week on Millikan on Mass, the re-imagination of the southern-half of the 500 block of Massachusetts Avenue.
Located in the heart of the Mass Ave. cultural district, Millikan on Mass will add 125 affordable and market rate apartments and about 19,000 square feet of retail space to the area. The project also includes improvements to the long-standing John J. Barton Apartments.
Insight developed a plan for the site that includes the preservation and rehabilitation of 367 public housing units in the Barton, as well as two phases of new construction at the base of the tower:
Phase II, a $13.9 million project, will include 15,000 square feet of retail space and 64 market-rate apartments. The project received a federal grant to help fund construction and create at least 30 new jobs on site.
Phase I, an $11.5 million project completed in December 2013 includes 4,000 square feet of retail space and 61 apartments. The apartments, which fully occupied, are available to low- and moderate-income households. Whatās more, Nine Irish Brothers, a Lafayette-based restaurant, is opening this month in Phase I.
