The Indianapolis Opera is teaming up with the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art for an experience blending live music, film and a unique take on the wild west. The museum events will culminate with Indianapolis Opera’s production of “The Girl of the Golden West” on March 21 and 23.

On Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. the museum, located at 500 W. Washington St., will screen the 1938 film version of “The Girl of the Golden West,” based on the play by David Belasco, featuring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

On March 8 at 1 p.m. the museum will present a panel discussion on “The Operatic West” (Myths and Realities of the 19th Century West) with Eiteljorg vice president and chief curatorial officer James Nottage, Indianapolis Opera’s artistic director James Caraher and guest stage director John Hoomes.

Both events at the Eiteljorg are free with museum admission. Members of the Indianapolis Opera Ensemble will present live performances prior to each event.

The Indianapolis Opera’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s “The Girl of the Golden West” will be live, on stage, at Clowes Memorial Hall March 21 and 23. This classic western is set during the 1849 Gold Rush and features a handsome outlaw in disguise, a sheriff in hot pursuit and a heroine that will do anything for the man that she loves.
