INDIANAPOLIS – Students will stage a drama based on a slave’s successful appeal for freedom before the Indiana Supreme Court.
“Bound for Freedom: the Case of Polly Strong” will be staged Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. and noon in the Supreme Court courtroom at the Statehouse. The event is free and open to the public but seating is limited.
A Knox circuit judge initially ruled in 1820 that Strong was the property of a Vincennes businessman, but the Supreme Court later reversed that decision, noting that Indiana had banned slavery in 1816, and Strong was set free.
More than 220 Indianapolis area students will participate in the program, which is part of the court’s celebration of Black History Month.
