IPS sports roundup: Jan. 28-Feb. 2

More by this author

The extreme cold knocked some basketball schedules out of whack last week, but it wasn’t catastrophic. Unfortunately for the girls, it just delayed the eventual end of the season. All four IPS girls teams lost their first sectional game. The boys are finally getting in the home stretch, with George Washington trending up and Crispus Attucks trending down.

Girls Basketball

Crispus Attucks (6-14)

            • Feb. 1 — Cardinal Ritter 64, Crispus Attucks 37

That’ll do it for the Attucks girls this season. The last time the Tigers failed to secure more than six wins was when they went 2-18 in 2008-09. Attucks does deserve a lot of credit, though, because six wins seemed unrealistic when it started 0-9.

Arsenal Tech (0-21)

            • Feb. 1 — Cathedral 58, Arsenal Tech 16

John Harrell’s website has Tech seasons archived back to the 200-01 season, and I’m not seeing a winless season anywhere in there. Combing the last two seasons, the Titans are 4-41.

George Washington (4-16)

            • Jan. 29 — Scecina 64, George Washington 38

Washington was just never really able to pull it together this season. The Continentals’ wins were dispersed so they never won two in a row — and always lost at least two games between each win.

Shortridge (15-9)

            • Feb. 2 — Covenant Christian 61, Shortridge 34

The only legitimate hope for IPS girls in the postseason was Shortridge, which played well all season and ripped off five straight wins to end the regular season. This is the fourth straight season Shortridge has lost its first sectional game.

Boys Basketball

Crispus Attucks (-)

            • Jan. 31 — Brebeuf Jesuit 46, Crispus Attucks 45

This Week:

            • Feb. 7 — vs. Tindley, 7:30 p.m.

            • Feb. 9 — at Culver Academy, 7:30 p.m.

To find the last time Attucks lost three straight games, you have to go back to 2012-13 season, when the Tigers did it twice. That’s a long time to go without such a streak (it’s just three losses, don’t lose your minds).

Arsenal Tech (5-11)

            • Jan. 31 — Arsenal Tech 56, Kokomo 52

This Week:

            • Feb. 8 — vs. Lafayette Jeff, 7:30 p.m.

            • Feb. 9 — vs. Indianapolis HomeSchool, 7:30 p.m.

Tech and Kokomo are really similar opponent at 4A, so it wasn’t surprising to see that one so close. Good on Tech for winning that game and snapping a three-game losing streak.

George Washington (8-7)

            • Jan. 29 — George Washington 62, Traders Point Christian 55

This Week:

            • Feb. 7 — vs. Indiana Math and Science, 7:30 p.m.

            • Feb. 8 — vs. Guerin Catholic, 7:30 p.m.

Washington is back above .500 and could be at 10-7 when it goes across town to Attucks next week.

Shortridge (5-11)

            • Feb. 1 — Indianapolis Metro 52, Shortridge 48

This Week:

            • Feb. 5 — vs. Indiana Deaf, 7:30 p.m.

            • Feb. 7 — vs. Irvington Prep Academy, 7:30 p.m.

            • Feb. 9 — at University, 7:30 p.m.

That’s three straight losses for Shortridge, with its two games this week practically being toss-ups. It’ll be a telling next handful of days for the Blue Devils.
