Harrison College to honor Dr. Virginia Caine

More by this author

Marion County Public Health Director Dr. Virginia Caine has spent more than three decades serving as a health advocate in Indianapolis and the state of Indiana.

The author of more than 20 clinical research papers has been recognized by organizations including the American Public Health Association, Indiana State Health Commissioner and Indiana Minority Health Commission.Ā

On Thursday, August 20, Dr. Caine will add to her list of accomplishments when she is recognized as a ā€œHarrison Hero.ā€Ā

Through September, Harrison College campuses in Indiana and Ohio are hosting free CPR training classes and are recognizing individuals who have served as health activists in their local communities.

ā€œDr. Caine has worked to educate Marion County for years on how to live healthier, safer, more productive lives,ā€ said Steve Hardin, president of Harrison’s east Indianapolis campus. ā€œBy offering free CPR training, Harrison hopes to have a similar impact in teaching the community this life saving skill and we thought it was the perfect time to recognize Dr. Caine’s commitment to health education. We are honored to present her with a ā€œHarrison Heroā€ award at our campus where nearly 300 students are preparing to follow in her footsteps as members of the healthcare industry.ā€

The American Heart Association estimates up to 200,000 people could be saved each year if CPR were performed early enough, and about 70 percent of Americans feel helpless during a cardiac emergency because they do not know CPR or their training has lapsed.Ā

Harrison’s campuses are partnering with local chapters of the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, hospitals and other health organizations to offer the free CPR training with a goal of certifying 1,000 people.

Harrison’s east Indianapolis campus is hosting sessions on:

Ā· Thursday, August 20, from 9 -11 a.m.

Ā· Thursday, August 20, from 6 – 8 p.m.

Ā· Wednesday, August 26, from 6 – 8 p.m.

Harrison also is hosting free CPR training at its downtown Indianapolis campus on:

Ā· Thursday, August 27, from 6 – 8 p.m.

ā€œHosting free CPR classes at our campuses is part of Harrison’s commitment to being a community educational resource and to providing those in the community with an invaluable skill that can help save lives,ā€ said Jason Konesco, president of Harrison College. ā€œHarrison believes that providing this type of education in the classroom and beyond empowers our students, their families, friends and communities.ā€

Attendees who complete the training through Harrison will become CPR certified for two years and will be eligible to receive a $2,500 tuition credit to attend Harrison. Each campus will award one attendee with the credit, for a total of more than $30,000 in tuition credit awarded to help new students pursue or continue a higher education degree.
