When Donald Trump announced this past week that he would be meeting with 100 prominent members of the African-American religious community, they made it abundantly clear that the so-called summit did not amount to an endorsement. In the end, the meeting did not go quite as well as Trump hoped it would.
And on Tuesday, The Nightly Show’s Larry Wilmore was on hand to pick up the pieces with his latest edition of “The Unblackening.”
Trump called the meeting “amazing,” but Wilmore wasn’t convinced. “Come on, man. No one has an amazing meeting with 100 African-American pastors. Unless they’re, like, a 12-button suit salesman.” But giving Trump the benefit of the doubt, Wilmore asked, “How many of these black pastors—or ‘blastors’—how many of these blastors endorsed him? I’m saying 85, 75 on a bad day.”
The final number who came out of the meeting declaring their support for the candidate was a measly three.
“OK, three black endorsements? ‘Blendorsments?’” Wilmore mused. “That’s not bad. Three black endorsements out of 42 million black people, carry the Omarosa…Wow! Man, he’s got a ways to go, guys.”
“But I’m surprised these numbers are so low. I don’t understand,” Wilmore added. “I was under the impression that Trump had a great relationship with the blacks.” After all, he’s told us as much so many times over the years.
