Middle and high school students from Central Indiana gathered at Olivet Missionary Baptist Church this morning, and among them, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Grammy award-winning artist, Common.
Common was the keynote speaker of the 2016 National Black History Month celebration, making it clear he was present as representation of not only hip-hop music but also as a man of God.
āI am hear to speak of greatest,ā said Common.
The purpose of the celebration was to let Indianapolis teens see they ācan be whatever they want to be,” said the artist.
The program began with words from Hogsett, CEO of Steward Speaker Inc., Matthew Steward and selections from the Tri City High School Choir.
Executive Director of Privacy and Diversity Office of U.S. Protection and Customs, Franklin Jones, introduced keynote speaker Common.
