Restaurant Spotlight: Toppers Pizza

More by this author

As an indecisive restaurant orderer who wants to try, like, everything, I have a special appreciation for the menu items offered at Toppers Pizza.

Want to eat tacos AND pizza? What about a loaded baked potato, a bacon cheeseburger, hot wings AND pizza? You will likely find a menu item at Toppers that speaks to you.

My husband and I decided to try Toppers for lunch on a recent Saturday and drove to the 10th Street location near IUPUI to check it out. We were warmly greeted by employees, and after we told the woman behind the counter that we were new, she gave us a quick ā€œtourā€ of the menu. We warned her it might be a few minutes (indecisive orderer, remember?) and she kindly gave us time and space to decide what we wanted.

My husband and I are breadsticks-and-cheese connoisseurs, so we knew we wanted to try the Topperstix with nacho cheese. We opted for the original Topperstix, though they come in several varieties — including Pepperonistix, Tacostix, Baconstix and Chocolate Baconstix, among others.

The pizza decision was a bit tougher. We settled on the Taco Topper pizza, which has taco sauce, taco meat, mozzarella, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, black olives, green onions and tortilla chips, and comes with sour cream and salsa on the side.

Other top contenders were the Loaded Tot-zza (with ranch sauce, mozzarella, tater tots, bacon, green onions and a drizzle of nacho cheese), the Mac N Cheese (cheese sauce and layers of macaroni noodles topped with mozzarella and cheddar) and the Bacon Cheeseburger (with Thousand Island dressing, beef, bacon, cheddar, mozzarella, tomato and pickles). Of course, Toppers also offers a build-your-own option plus more typical choices like the Veggie Classic, the Meat Topper and the Big Topper (a deluxe- or supreme-type pizza).

Toppers is also good for dippers — every pizza comes with a side of dipping sauce, and there are 16 options ranging from the classic (marinara and nacho cheese) to the more unique (bacon honey mustard, chipotle ranch and chocolate and vanilla frosting).

Our pizza already came with salsa and sour cream, and we had nacho cheese for the breadsticks, but my husband wanted to try the chipotle ranch too, so that’s what we chose for our additional side of sauce.

After we placed our order, the man ringing us up took the time to figure out that if we made our pizza a large instead of a medium, we’d save a few dollars with one of their meal deals. More pizza for less money? Of course we took the suggestion, and we were really appreciative for the extra step he took to make sure we got the best possible deal.

We were hoping to eat in, but the restaurant is more carryout/delivery focused, and by the time we got home on the south side, our pizza needed to be reheated. I didn’t like what the reheating did to the lettuce (which is probably added after the pizza is cooked), but it was still a quality taco pizza. Toppers passed the true test (the breadsticks-and-cheese screening) with flying colors. If we lived closer to one of the two Toppers locations — by IUPUI and in Carmel — it’d be added to our regular pizza rotation.
