Jazz up your diet at the Pita Pit

More by this author

Lately, I’ve been hitting the gym like crazy trying to shed pounds for the summer. Grabbing my Nikes and getting in the gym is the easy part – it’s what I choose to eat that can sometimes be difficult.

I do allow myself the occasional slice of pizza or extra helping of collards but constantly eating healthy food (or drinking my meals) can get boring. I’m so glad there are restaurants like Pita Pit to shake things up.

A healthy alternative to a traditional sandwich, Pita Pit offers a wide variety of fresh options tucked neatly in pita bread that leaves you satisfied and without regret.

I like a little protein in my diet, so I typically opt for a meat pita. The turkey pita is always a good way to go, but they also offer other choices such as the Dagwood made with turkey, ham and prime rib; tuna; or the chicken Souvlaki made with Greek seasoned chicken.

If you want to lay off the meat, Pita Pit has several veggie pitas such as the Falafel with spiced chickpeas; hummus; spicy black bean; and cheese.

The best part about the Pita Pit is that you can customize your order however you like it with toppings, cheeses and sauces. If you like your pita with cucumbers or pepperonchinis – you got it. Want to add Tzatziki sauce – no problem. Pita Pit has recently added more interesting choices, such as dried cranberries, basil pesto and sweet chili sauce that can be added.

Pita Pit has several beverage options, but if you’re really feeling like a healthy boost, order a smoothie in one of four flavors. The Mango Tango (vanilla frozen yogurt, mango juice, strawberries and mangos) sounds delish!

Jonesin’ for some breakfast? Pita Pit offers breakfast pitas served any time. Wake up with the Morning Glory, scrambled eggs, avocados, sautéed tomatoes, hash browns, grilled peppers and onions and your choice of cheese and sauce; or have breakfast for lunch or dinner with the Sausage Scramble, eggs, Italian sausage, hash browns, peppers, onions and cheese.

Kids can even eat healthy at Pita Pit with three kid-sized pita options such as turkey, ham, or cheese. They also offer platters for large events.

I’ve never been a hard-core calorie counter, but what also makes Pita Pit awesome is that on its website, you can build your own pita and have the nutritional value added up for you.

Whether you’re preparing for the summer, continuing healthy habits from Lent, or have recently received instructions from your doctor to eat healthier, Pita Pit is a nice break from a boring sandwich and has something for everyone to enjoy.
