Indiana has long embraced a simple but powerful value: if people are willing to work, they should have the opportunity to succeed. Access to affordable childcare is one of the most important tools that allows working parents to remain employed, provide for their families, and contribute to our economy. Recent reductions in childcare voucher support threaten that promise.
At A Learning Bee Academy, we have seen firsthand how these cuts affect real families. One mother shared that she was already living paycheck to paycheck, balancing work, housing, transportation, and the rising costs of everyday life. She was, in her own words, “one financial stressor away from financial distress.” When changes to childcare assistance increased her out-of-pocket costs, that stressor arrived. Suddenly, childcare became unaffordable, forcing difficult decisions about employment, family finances, and her child’s early learning opportunities.
Her story is not unique. Across Indiana, working families rely on childcare vouchers to bridge the gap between what they earn and what quality care costs. When support is reduced, parents are often forced to cut work hours, leave jobs entirely, or seek less reliable care arrangements. Employers lose workers, families lose income, and children lose access to stable learning environments during their most important developmental years.
If Indiana wants to keep Hoosiers working, growing businesses, and strengthening local communities, we must invest in the systems that make work possible. Childcare is not a luxury. It is workforce infrastructure. Protecting childcare assistance means protecting working families and preserving Indiana’s commitment to opportunity, responsibility, and economic growth.
