In like a lion, out like a lamb, and other sayings from the almanac — March is finally here.

Spring is in full bloom in Indianapolis as Hoosiers gather to celebrate Women’s History Month, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day and more. The Recorder put together a list of a few family-friendly events, activities and performances happening in and around Indianapolis this month.

2025 International Women’s Day Event — Free

Presented by Rupal Thanawala, board chair for the Indiana Commission for Women, the International Women’s Day event aims to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political impact of women around the world. The 2025 campaign theme is #AccelerateAction, centering on strategies to promote women’s advancement.

Nourishing Well: Black Women and the Poetics of Sacred Space — Free

Poet Mariah Ivey’s “Nourishing Well” exhibition features 19 Black women artists across a variety of mediums exploring the narratives, experiences and intersecting identities of Black women. The exhibition is on view at Gallery 924 Feb. 7-March 20.

The ISO at Butler: Mozart and Brahms — Free

The conclusion of the ISO at Butler series features Butler JCA faculty member and ISO clarinetist Trina Gross for a performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet as well as ISO string players for Brahm’s Sextet for Strings No.1 in B-Flat Major.

First Friday Gallery Opening “11:11” by Israel Solomon — Free

For resident artist Israel Solomon, the sequence of numbers seen in “11:11” represents life-changing events, stories and ideas from his life. Solomon’s new solo exhibition in the Harrison Gallery includes more than 30 new works.

Indianapolis Children’s Choir Season Concert: Now is the Time — $16

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir presents “Sounds of Progress” as part of its 2024-25 season. The performance will feature themes of hope and nostalgia as they explore the “now and then” of choir and look to the future of singers in Indianapolis.

Limelight: A Conversation with Sound — $50

Justin S. Kinchen, classical violinist and jazz trumpeter, will join the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra for a performance featuring a variety of musical genres Kinchen will flex his musical talents during the concert playing violin, trumpet and piano as well as singing and conducting the orchestra.

Special Event: Monét X Change — $30

New York-based drag queen Monét X Change is performing three sets at Helium Comedy Club on March 8. Having won RuPaul’s Drag Race twice and earning the Miss Congeniality title on season 10, Monét X Change is the first queen of color inducted into the Hall of Fame after winning All-Stars 4.

The Indiana Repertory Theatre presents Tennessee Williams’ timeless classic, “A Glass Menagerie.” The story follows a faded Southern belle and her two adult children as they find new and beautiful ways to find hope and survive their drab lives.

Friday, March 14

“Stew” — $15-$30

Directed by LaKesha Lorene, “Stew” is the second show of the NAATC’s 2024-25 season, which is dedicated to “cementing the legacy” of Indianapolis’ first Black equity theater company. “Stew,” which premieres March 13 at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center, follows four generations of Tucker women as they come together to prepare a stew for a church event.

Indiana Comic Convention — $68-$299

Indianapolis’ largest, true comic convention is back this year, featuring hundreds of exhibitors catering to various interests — from comic books to toys, games, anime, art, fashion, entertainment and more. Additionally, the convention will include a roster full of industry professionals and celebrities for meet and greets and panel discussions.

Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design — Included with admission, $33-$38

The exhibition features more than 60 costumes from films Oscar Award-winning costume designer Rute E. Carter worked on, such as “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Coming 2 America,” “Roots (2014),” “Selma” and more.

Art & Soul Sundays — Free
