A crisp summer breeze rustled through the trees of Tarkington Park in central Indianapolis, carrying the echoes of laughter, cheers and the rhythmic thud of a football. It wasn’t just another weekend practice for the Indy Steelers, a youth football organization with a rich history. It was one of the final practices before the inaugural “Coach Nell Classic,” a tournament named after their beloved founder, Richard Donnell “Coach Nell” Hamilton.
Coach Nell’s absence cast a long shadow, but one that was softened by the vibrant energy of the young athletes. In January 2023, the community was devastated by his sudden passing from a road rage shooting. More than just a coach, Hamilton was a mentor, confidant and guiding light for countless young men in the city’s communities. He saw potential where others saw struggle, fostering discipline, teamwork and a sense of belonging on the field that transcended tackles and touchdowns.
The tournament, happening July 27, speaks to Hamilton’s everlasting legacy. Soon, “Richard ‘Coach Nell’ Hamilton Field” at Tarkington Park will become a reality as Indy Parks approved the renaming last summer.
“He wouldn’t want us all moping around,” Indy Steelers coach Darryl Smith Sr. said. “He’d want us to play hard, have fun and learn from one other. I believe that’s what the Coach Nell Classic is all about.”

Smith’s words echoed the sentiments of many. Parents, volunteers and rival coaches spoke of Coach Nell’s dedication.
Aside from the games, there will also be a mile-long parade beginning at Tarkington Park and ending at Butler University, where the Coach Nell Classic takes place.
Indy Steelers president Tiffany Hamilton, wife of Coach Nell, believes it is bigger than football.
“He wasn’t just coaching football; he was coaching life,” Tiffany Hamilton said. “He made sure these boys knew they were valued, that they had options.”
Coach Nell’s wife and children shared stories about the man behind the whistle, his infectious enthusiasm and his unwavering belief in his players.
Prior to his passing, Coach Nell surmised the importance of coaching and mentorship with a quote borrowed from legendary coach Tom Landry: “A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.”
The Coach Nell Classic takes place July 27 at Sellick Bowl at Butler University. For more information, visit indysteelers.org.
