Democrat plans new challenge to Ind. Rep. Souder

More by this author

The Democrat who narrowly lost to Indiana Republican Congressman Mark Souder in 2006 is planning another campaign.

Former Fort Wayne City Councilman Tom Hayhurst has formed a committee to raise money for a challenge next year to Souder, who first won election in northeastern Indiana’s 3rd District in 1994.

Hayhurst is a physician and has advocated overhauling the nation’s health insurance system.

Souder defeated Hayhurst by a margin of 54 percent to 46 percent in 2006 in what is the closest result in his eight House campaigns.

Democrats spent heavily in trying to unseat Souder in last year’s election, but he beat Mike Montagano by 15 percentage points.
