Vigil honors slain athlete

Rev. Malachi Walker (second from the right), director of Young Men’s Inc., leads a prayer vigil with family members of slain athlete Dominique Corder. Corder, a standout quarterback at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minn., and an Emmerich Manual High School graduate, was home from school visiting with relatives when the 20-year-old was shot outside of his grandmother’s home, Anna Hall, on New Year’s Day. According to Corder’s aunt, Sandra Washington, a vehicle was parked in front of the home, and when Corder asked the driver to move down the street, someone fired a shot to his abdomen. About 60 people attended the vigil, which was held outside of Corder’s grandmother’s home on West 27th St.

Relatives, friends and others have only tears to express their feelings over the senseless violence that snuffed out the life of another promising young man. The shooting victim’s aunt, Karen Grundy (left), leans on the shoulder of his grandmother, Anna Hall, during the vigil. (Photos/L. Blaylock)
