The Indianapolis Department of Works (Indy DPW) announced leaf collection for the 2024 season will run from Nov. 11-Dec. 6.

Residents can leave up to 40 bags of leaves for pickup per week on their regularly scheduled trash day at no additional cost. During the week of Thanksgiving, leaf collection will be operating on a slide schedule.

Indy DPW advises residents to adhere to the following guidelines:

Place leaves in plastic bags.

Keep bags at least 3 feet away from trash cart for easy pickup.

Leaf bags should be outside by 7 a.m. on your normal trash day.

Collected leaves will be taken to the South Side Landfill, who will not be offering composting this year. Residents can also bring their leaves to Greencycle, where you can pay $20 for the leaves to be composted. Greencycle does not accept plastic bags.

While raking, Indy DPW asks citizens to clear leaves from storm drains to prevent flooding and drainage issues. Leaves should not be raked into the streets, as they cause issues with the street sweepers. Burning leaves is illegal in Marion Couty because it can release harmful particles into the air.

Outside of the leaf collection season, residents can place bags of leaves inside their trash bins or take them to the Citizens’ Transfer Station on Saturdays. If your route is missed on a leaf collection day, you can call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 to open a service request.
