53rd Indiana Flower and Patio Show

Many beautiful gardens – created by Indiana’s premier landscape designers – will be on display at the 53rd annual Indiana Flower & Patio Show.

The show runs from March 12-20 inside the Indiana State Fairgrounds’ West Pavilion.

The pavilion will also be filled with 250 outdoor living experts, displays encompassing the latest in landscaping trends and products and dozens of educational programs.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

General admission at the door is $12 adult; children 12 and under are are admitted free. Three-dollars-off discount coupons are available on the show’s web site, www.indianaflowerandpatioshow.com, and in show advertising.

Harrison Home opens major exhibit

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site opened its major exhibit of 2011, entitled “Windows to the Past: Harrison’s Indianapolis” at the museum at 1230 N. Delaware St.

The exhibit depicts Indianapolis from 1854 to 1913 when the Harrisons lived in the Circle City. The new exhibit is included in tours of the museum now through Nov. 9.

There is an admission fee to the home.

IRT drama explores 1930 racial crimes

On March 22, the Indiana Repertroy Theatre will open its curtains to a world-premiere, featuring two-time Tony-nominated actor AndrĆ© De Shields in “The Gospel According to James,” which is based on the 1930 double lynching that took place in Marion, Ind.

The play focuses on a fictional meeting between James Cameron and Mary Bell. Cameron, who survived the lynching, and Bell was the only woman with them that night. The play dramatizes the events leading up to the racial crimes, and it also explores the remembrances of characters in the play that day.

The play runs from March 22 through April 10. Ticket prices range from $20-$52.

Civic’s ā€˜Cabaret’ breaks mold

Civic Theatre’s production of “Cabaret” comes to the stage on the campus of Marian University, 3200 Cold Spring Rd., March 11-26. The Tony Award-winning musical will be performed Thursdays through Sundays beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Set on the eve of Hitler’s rise to power, the show follows Sally Bowles and the other cabaret dancers of the seedy Kit Kat Klub living in Berlin at the epicenter of the foreboding and tension. The cabaret serves as a wild, self-indulgent escape where the people of Berlin come to forget the intensifying unrest.

Single tickets are $25 for Thursday performances and $32 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances.

Stutz looking for volunteers for open house

The Stutz Artists Association is looking for volunteers for the 18th annual Stutz Artists Open House April 29-30 at the historic Stutz Business Center.

Volunteers who work at least one three-hour shift will receive a free event T-shirt and admission to the two-day event. In addition to enjoying one of the city’s premier cultural events, volunteers may give directions, assist artists in their studios or help entertainers move equipment. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will be asked to attend a one-hour training session.

At the event, more than 70 artists will be in their studios showing work that ranges from paintings, drawings and photography, to sculpture, jewelry and furniture.

Hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on April 29 and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 30 at the Stutz Business Center at 10th Street and Capitol Avenue.

Admission is $10 in advance at Old National Bank centers or $12 at the gate. Ticket proceeds support the Stutz Residency Program.
