Day One: Expect the unexpected at White River State Park

More by this author

It’s not everyday you get the chance to eat world famous shrimp, tour art museums and land a front row seat at a baseball game…and get paid for it. When I was approached to join a group of other media professionals to officially tour White River State Park, I jumped on the opportunity.

Being from Cleveland, Ohio and only have been in Indy for a little over two years, I’ve learned a lot about the city, but it’s also safe to say I’m still learning. My day one experience at the park and surrounding areas left me with gained knowledge of some of the city’s attractions I think native locals overlook.

From my slideshow below, you’ll notice I tried lots of food. I ate so much that when it came time for dinner, I was practically forcing down delicious entrees. Beside the food, I learned some things I wasn’t previously aware of.

Think you know White River State Park? Here’s my list of fun facts gathered from my day one experience:

  • The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art displays over 10,000 works of art
  • Visitors may visit the Eiteljorg Museum Cafe and gift shop without touring the museum
  • The Grand Canyon exhibit at the Eiteljorg has one of the coolest photo opps (see slideshow)
  • The Indianapolis Indians are celebrating their 20th season
  • Victory Field has over 14,200 seats and just about 9,000 people are in attendance each game
  • Need some juice? Visitors may charge their mobile devices in the AT&T charging station complete with a digital passcode to house devices while they charge (I found this out once my phone died)
  • St. Elmo’s Steak House has been in operation since 1902
  • What’s the difference from St. Elmo’s and their sister restaurant Harry & Izzy’s? Visitors looking for a more traditional upscale atmosphere with high quality food will enjoy St. Elmo’s. Those looking for a more casual environment with the same high-quality cuisine will enjoy Harry & Izzy’s.
