HUD report: Homelessness in Indiana declines in 2017

Homelessness has declined in Indiana, according to the latest national estimate by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). While overall homelessness increased by 0.7 percent nationally since 2016, since 2010 there has been a national decline of 13.1 percent. HUDā€™s 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress found the following regarding homelessness across Indiana:

– 5,438 people were homeless, an overall 6.2 percent decrease from 2016 (360 individuals) and a 15.7 percent decrease from 2010 (1,014).

– 4,869 homeless persons (89.5 percent) were located in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs while 569 (11.7 percent) were unsheltered.

– The number of unsheltered homeless individuals in 2017 (541) decreased by 18.8 percent from 2016 and by 36.5 percent from 2010.

– The number of families with children experiencing homelessness in 2017 (1,815) declined by 8.1 percent (159 families) since 2016 and by 36.6 percent (1,049) since 2010.

HUDā€™s national estimate is based on data reported by approximately 3,000 cities and counties across the nation.
