Jehovah’s Witnesses are known all over the world for what are considered to be their eccentric and somewhat unfathomable practices.
From the outside looking in, the way in which the religion works can be difficult to understand. After all, what other faith would encourage its members to knock on door after door to spread its message?
Although they have come in for a lot of criticism, when you take a closer look at the beliefs system that Jehovah’s Witnesses have you would be able to see why they live the way they do. It all makes sense when you see that they do not believe in life after death and thus have to make the most of now and also that they take the teachings of the Bible as an instruction manual for daily life. Taking a look at some of the practices that Jehovah’s Witnesses undertake every day will give you a much better insight into the religion and a little understand as to why they live how they do:
Proselytization – This is the element of the Jehovah’s Witnesses practices that they are renowned for and will no doubt be derided for by many people all over the world. They go from house to house, knocking on doors in order to spread the word of Jehovah. This helps them to connect to people and discuss their beliefs. The ultimate aim of this practice is to help people improve their lives and spread a little hope where it is needed before reporting back to their community at a later date as to how their missionary work is going.
Ethics – The ethics and moral code that is held dear by Jehovah’s Witnesses is incredibly strict and does not leave much room for bending the rules. They actually reflect conservative Christian beliefs and values so traditionalists may be mistaken for Jehovah’s Witnesses!
Community Activity – Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that they should only mix with people of their own faith unless carrying out their missionary work. The reason for this is to avoid a conflict of interests because few others outside of the Jehovah’s Witnesses will help the same ethical values and God has only delivered one true and accurate message. To pollute that would be considered a sin.
Avoidance Of Public Holidays – Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate Christmas, as is well known, but neither do they celebrate Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mothering Sunday or any other holidays for that matter. The reason behind this is that they are denounced as of pagan origins. They do celebrate anniversaries, weddings and other similar events though, with the exception of birthdays. Birthdays only focus on one person and so promote self-importance, which is to be avoided.
Politics – Jehovah’s Witnesses do not follow politics nor do they take part because they only bear one true allegiance – their allegiance to God. All other loyalties are discarded as a result of that. This includes any national allegiances that they may feel. They are not allowed to sing a national anthem or salute a flag at all. This, of course, extends to refusing to serve their country in the military, and this is where most of their past controversy has lain. They just do not believe in it though because they choose to believe in God alone instead.
