The Indiana Fever opened the 2026 WNBA Playoffs with a 102-85 loss to the Las Vegas Aces in Game 1 on Sept. 27 at Michelob ULTRA Arena.
The defending champion Aces delivered a strong offensive performance, neutralizing Indiana’s game plan and taking a 1-0 lead in the first-round series.
Las Vegas shot 59% from the field and 47% from three-point land, generating open looks on many possessions. Aces center A’ja Wilson anchored the attack, tying her playoff career high with 38 points on 15-of-19 shooting while grabbing 16 rebounds, blocking four shots, and recording two steals.
Fever guard Caitlin Clark bluntly graded her team’s defensive performance as an “F” during the postgame press conference.
“I mean, I think they’re good defenders, but at the same time, we made it hard on ourselves too,” Clark said. “I thought just, like, our actions were sloppy. I thought what we were running just wasn’t great, and just nobody got an easy or open look.”
Fever head coach Stephanie White pointed to the team’s offensive breakdowns as the primary catalyst for the defensive struggles.
“Your first line of transition defense is offensive execution. And 28 points off of turnovers and 17 points from the free-throw line,” White said. “You know, those are easy buckets, so we didn’t do our job.”
Clark finished with a double-double, logging 15 points and 10 assists, but struggled from the floor on 6-of-17 shooting. Backcourt teammate and MVP candidate Kelsey Mitchell also had a difficult shooting night, finishing with 12 points on a 4-of-16 performance.
Center Aliyah Boston led the Fever with 18 points and eight rebounds, but found herself navigating early foul trouble against Wilson.
“I think for me, obviously I picked up two fouls, so I got to get my hand out the cookie jar,” Boston said. “I mean, a lot of them were jumpers. So, for me, just closing back out a little bit quicker, um, and trying to get in her space. But, I mean, she hit tough shots. She hit tough shots, and you take it on the chin and you go down.”
Despite the lopsided result, Indiana found a bright spot in rookie guard Raven Johnson. Playing extended minutes following a late regular-season leg injury to backup guard Ty Harris, Johnson provided a necessary spark off the bench. She scored 14 points on highly efficient 6-of-7 shooting in 22 minutes, adding two steals, one assist and a three-pointer. Sophie Cunningham also contributed 13 points and three long-range conversions as a reserve.
The Fever, who finished the regular season with a 28-16 record, now face an elimination scenario. Game 2 tips off on Sept. 29 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where Indiana must secure a victory over the 31-13 Aces to keep their championship hopes alive.
