From Financial Literacy to Legacy: Empowering Women for Equitable Communities

More by this author

In the pursuit of equitable communities, it’s imperative to acknowledge the pivotal role of women and their journey towards financial empowerment. The path from financial literacy to generational wealth holds immense promise, especially when we recognize the role that  women hold in this space. In Central Indiana, and across the nation, ensuring women have the tools and knowledge to create generational wealth is a significant step towards building stronger, more equitable communities. It is through initiatives like the Women’s Equity Brunch, better known as WE Brunch Indy, that we’re working to pave the way for this transformation.

Generational wealth isn’t merely about accumulating money; it’s about securing a future for our families and communities. When women are empowered to make informed financial decisions and harness their financial potential, the benefits are profound—not just for individuals but for society as a whole.

One of the most glaring disparities in our society is the persistent gender pay gap. Even today, women continue to earn less than men on average. In 2017, for every dollar a Central Indiana man made, a Central Indiana woman made just 79 cents. This stark inequality impacts not only the present but the future as well. It hampers women’s ability to invest, save, and pass on financial resources to the next generation. Closing this pay gap is an essential step towards advancing gender equity and, in turn, building equitable communities. But it all starts with access to information.

By equiping women with the knowledge to manage their finances, make smart investments, and understand the power of compounding, we are equipping them to secure their future and that of their families. Financial literacy can break the cycle of poverty, ensuring that women can provide a stable and prosperous foundation for the next generation. And while the journey starts with one, connected communities create systems of support that help propel women forward.

Women who have access to mentorship and a strong network of professionals are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the world, and WE Brunch Indy events were created as a response to the dire need of women in Central Indiana.

Co-founder Doneisha Posey and I recognized the gap in women’s generational wealth—especially for women of Color—Indiana’s lack of women in high-level leadership roles, the disproportionate data around health equity in Central Indiana—again disproportionately impacting women of Color—and the unique barriers women face around business ownership, we acted. Through WE Brunch events, we continually seek to equip women with education and a network of community support to help them not just meet but supersede their dreams.

As we strive for more equitable communities, we must recognize the potential within women to lead the way. Educating and empowering women to create generational wealth is a transformative step towards ensuring that the next generation inherits not just financial resources but also the knowledge and tools to sustain and grow them. Through initiatives like WE Brunch Indy, we can bridge the gap, break the chains of financial inequality, and work towards building communities that are fair, prosperous, and inclusive.

Generational wealth is not just a financial legacy; it is a testament to the strength, resilience, and determination of women to create a better future for themselves and their communities. Let us rally behind women, support initiatives like WE Brunch Indy, and together, let’s create a brighter, more equitable future for Central Indiana.
