In an effort to provide Hoosiers with lower gas prices, Gov. Mike Braun extended the suspension of Indiana’s Gasoline Usage Tax on May 6 in addition to suspending the Gasoline Excise Tax through June 7.

Braun previously declared an energy emergency on April 8, suspending the collection of the Gasoline Use Tax for 30 days.

“Making life more affordable for Hoosiers will always be my top priority. Suspending both the gas tax and excise tax gives Hoosiers meaningful relief for the next month,” Braun said.

The gasoline usage tax is $0.23 per gallon for May, and the gasoline excise tax’s current rate is $0.36 per gallon for 2026, according to data presented in Braun’s announcement of the extension. Braun’s extension of the gas use tax holiday will give Hoosiers a 12.4% discount on the average price of gasoline in Indiana.

House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne) praised the governor’s decision to extend the gas use tax holiday along with the suspension of the excise tax.

“I am grateful that Hoosiers will get relief at the pump for another 30 days. Rep. Gregory W. Porter called for suspending both the sales tax and excise tax on gasoline last month, and House Democrats are glad Gov. Braun has now taken that step. However, our governor can also lobby his allies in D.C. to ease prices at the pump,” GiaQuinta said in a statement.

According to a press release, GiaQuinta cited the war in Iran as a contributing factor in rising fuel prices across the nation.

“Gas was affordable until the president chose to escalate in Iran with no clear strategy, no defined goals and no exit plan. That choice disrupted global energy markets, and Hoosiers are paying for it every time they fill up,” GiaQuinta said. “Suspending both gas taxes gives Hoosiers $0.59 back per gallon, but the president’s policy chaos is costing them far more than that. We’re putting a band-aid on a wound the White House created.”

As gas prices are expected to fall, GiaQuinta said the effort to secure affordability for Hoosiers is not yet complete.

“It’s time for Gov. Braun and Indiana’s congressional Republicans to push for an end to the war in Iran. This is the single most effective action they could take today to bring down prices for Hoosiers in the long term, not just this month,” GiaQuinta said.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, Braun also announced that he will increase the mileage reimbursement rate for state employees who utilize their own vehicles for work-related travel, but “details on that increase will be shared once confirmed.” At the time of reporting, this initiative has not yet been implemented.
