The American Red Cross is teaming up with local partners to make homes in the Haughville neighborhood safer by providing free smoke alarms and fire safety education. From 12 to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 25, Red Cross volunteers will install the devices during a special Sound the Alarm event.
“Sound the Alarm is a rewarding way to give back and directly help local families,” said Terry Stigdon, regional chief executive. “It’s a day of coming together to support one another, especially those most vulnerable to home fires. A working smoking alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy, and as a community, we can help our neighbors stay safe by ensuring they have these lifesaving devices.”

Haughville residents in need of smoke alarms can schedule a free installation by visiting redcross.org/inhomefires. During the 20-minute visits, volunteers will not only install the alarms but also share critical fire safety tips. This includes advice on preventing fires, steps to take if a fire occurs and how to create an effective escape plan for emergencies.
The event is part of the Red Cross’s national Home Fire Campaign, which has already made a significant impact. Since its launch in 2014, the campaign has helped save 2,284 lives and made over 1.1 million households safer. More than 2.6 million smoke alarms have been installed nationwide through the initiative.

This life-saving effort is made possible thanks to support from corporate sponsors, including Allegion, Allied Solutions and Citizens Energy Group.
The Red Cross encourages community members to take advantage of this free service and join the effort to create a safer Indianapolis. For more information about the event or to learn how you can volunteer, visit redcross.org.
