Holy Week through their eyes

More by this author

Holy Week invites us to slow down and walk again through the sacred story of Christ’s final days. As we remember the journey to the cross and the miracle of the resurrection, I find myself reflecting on those who stood close enough to witness it.

We are entering Holy Week. The journey begins with Palm Sunday, culminating with Resurrection Sunday. Reflecting on the week, I think about the ones who experienced it. Among them were the women — Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Mary of Clopas. I think about Holy Week through what they saw, breathed and experienced. I think about how they worshipped Christ during Holy Week and beyond, and what it means for us.

Faithful presence

The women remained present. While many others scattered in fear, the women stayed near the cross. They watched, they witnessed, and they did not abandon Jesus in the moment of suffering. They remind us that faithfulness often means simply staying when it would be easier to leave. God calls us to remain present in difficult moments — in grief, uncertainty, and hardship. Faithfulness sometimes looks like showing up and standing near the cross.

“Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” John 19:25

Devoted service

The women continued to serve with love and devotion. Even after the crucifixion, they prepared spices and returned to the tomb at dawn. Their service did not stop when hope seemed lost. Their actions show a heart of commitment and care. Faithfulness is expressed through service — continuing to love, care, and minister even when circumstances are painful or uncertain. Their devotion reminds us that the work of discipleship continues every season.

“The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.”      Luke 23:55–56

Courageous witness

The women became the first witnesses to the resurrection. Mary Magdalene was entrusted with the news that the tomb was empty and was sent to share that message with the disciples. What began as quiet faithfulness became bold proclamation. God calls us not only to remain faithful but also to share the good news. Their witness reminds us that the message of resurrection is meant to be carried into the world.

“Jesus said to her, ‘Go to my brothers and say to them…’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord.’” John 20:17–18

As we enter Holy Week, the witness of the women invites us to reflect on what faithfulness truly looks like. They remained present in moments of sorrow, served with devotion when hope seemed uncertain, and carried the message of resurrection with courage. Their example reminds us that discipleship is lived through quiet acts of commitment and steadfast love. Yet their faithfulness ultimately points us back to the one they followed — Jesus Christ.

As we remember the sacred journey from the cross to the empty tomb, we honor Christ not only during Holy Week, but in every week that follows, living lives marked by the same faithful presence, service, and witness.
