The Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) is hosting a Free Legal Clinic later this month.

Hosted in partnership with Indiana Legal Services (ILS) and the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic (NCLC), the Free Legal Clinic is open to members of the community in need of free legal assistance, including expungement, eviction sealing and tax help.

The clinic takes place from 3-7 p.m. on July 29 at the Central Library branch.

“This clinic is one of many examples of how the library is truly a community hub where people can find support, guidance and real solutions to life’s challenges, allowing us to champion equitable access to knowledge and resources for all,” said Gregory Hill, CEO of IndyPL. “Our partnerships with Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic and Indiana Legal Services, Inc. allow us to connect our community with trusted legal help and resources they may not otherwise be able to access.”

Legal staff from the ILS and NCLS will be on-site at Central Library providing professional services for criminal record expungement and eviction sealing to qualifying individuals free of cost. Attendees must, however, meet income requirements to receive assistance for the services, according to a press release.

Attorneys will also be on-site to offer low-income taxpayer assistance near the Riley Room. Tax consultations are also free and open to all attendees, regardless of income. Tax consultations do not require an appointment and are on a first-come, first-served basis.

IndyPL’s on-staff social work team will also have tables set up near the Riley Room and be available throughout the event to provide information and consultations for housing, education, health and food assistance.

IndyPL will provide a limited number of bus passes to individuals in need of transportation to the Free Legal Clinic, though transportation is not guaranteed. Those in need are instructed to call 317-275-4476 and leave a voice message; an IndyPL staff member will return the call as soon as possible.
