Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is initiating a series of Community Conversations in June 2025 to engage families, staff and community members in discussions about recent legislative developments and the formation of the Indianapolis Local Education Alliance (ILEA).
Community Conversations Schedule:
- June 3, 6–8 p.m. – Lew Wallace School 107
- June 5, 6–8 p.m. – James Whitcomb Riley School 43
- June 11, 6–8 p.m. – James Russell Lowell School 51
- June 17, 6–8 p.m. – William McKinley School 39
Each session will be co-hosted by IPS Commissioners and will begin with welcome remarks, followed by a brief presentation on the history of IPS and the newly formed ILEA. Attendees will also participate in small group discussions. The district will provide refreshments and language translation services at each event.

The ILEA, established by the Indiana General Assembly during the recent legislative session, is a nine-member board led by Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson. The alliance aims to foster collaboration between IPS and charter schools within the district, focusing on shared transportation, facilities and governance structures. The board is tasked with submitting recommendations to the state education secretary and legislators by the end of the year.

Johnson emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of education in Indianapolis.
“We remain committed to advocating for our families, students and staff throughout the course of our engagement with the ILEA,” she stated.
