Ascension St. Vincent marked a major milestone with the ribbon cutting of the new Lucas Family Brain and Spine Hospital.

The facility, located on the 86th Street campus, will serve as a regional hub for advanced brain and spine care in Indiana, offering cutting-edge technology and a design focused on patient healing and clinical excellence.

“This is more than just a new hospital; it’s a transformative investment in our patients and our community,” said Stephan Masoncup, chief strategy officer for Ascension St. Vincent. “This facility will enable us to deliver the most advanced care for brain and spine conditions, ensuring that children and adults in Indiana and beyond have access to world-class treatment close to home.”

The hospital features 38 specialized intensive care rooms, eight operating suites and two advanced interventional neuroradiology labs. These spaces are equipped for minimally invasive procedures used to treat stroke, brain aneurysms and other complex neurological conditions.

Named to recognize the Lucas family, the new hospital honors their long-standing philanthropic support of Ascension St. Vincent and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Katie Lucas, president of Lucas Oil and board chair of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation, and Morgan Lucas, CEO of Lucas Oil, shared their remarks at the ceremony.

“Our family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary care we have received through Ascension St. Vincent, and it is an honor to support this exceptional organization and everything it represents,” said Katie Lucas. “This hospital will make a difference in countless lives, and we are proud to be part of something so impactful for our community and those traveling to receive this world-class care.”

Each of the patient rooms in the hospital is ICU-capable and outfitted with modern features designed to enhance care, comfort and communication. The surgical suites incorporate 360-degree imaging, real-time contrast tracking and integrated navigation systems to reduce operating times and improve outcomes. Built-in streaming capabilities will also support Ascension St. Vincent’s Neurological Surgery Residency Program.

Beyond its technical capabilities, the facility was built with an emphasis on healing-focused design. Natural light, visual landmarks and spatial clarity support neurological recovery and provide comfort for patients whose conditions may affect memory, mood or perception.

The opening of the Lucas Family Brain and Spine Hospital follows the January debut of the Ascension St. Vincent Women and Infants Hospital. Both projects are part of a broader, multi-year investment to reimagine and expand the 86th Street Campus, positioning it as a center for advanced and specialized medical care in Indiana.

Ascension St. Vincent officials say the new brain and spine hospital is already drawing interest from across the region and is expected to serve thousands of patients annually.
