Marian University president, Daniel J. Elsener, received his third Sagamore of Wabash Award, the governor’s highest honor.
The Sagamore of Wabash honors those who have made significant contributions to the state and its heritage. Elsener has received the award from Gov. Mitch Daniels, Gov. Mike Pence and Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Elsener was honored for his commitment to excellence in learning through teaching, researching and scholarly activities and his leadership of Marian University.
Through his work, Elsener expanded Marian University’s offerings, including the Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine and Klipsch Educators College. He oversaw a significant increase in enrollment and attracted millions of dollars in funding for research.
Elsener’s efforts also extended beyond the campus, contributing to the advancement of Indiana’s educational landscape, workforce development, health professions and national recognition of social mobility.
The Sagamore of Wabash was created during Gov. Ralph Gates’ term and is symbolic of Indiana’s appreciation for exemplary service. Previous honorees include astronauts, presidents, ambassadors, artists and citizens who have made a significant impact in Indiana.

“This honor reflects positively on the strength of Marian University’s vision, mission and values, as well as the collective efforts of the entire Marian University community,” Elsener said. “It affirms our commitment to advancing excellence in learning and to fostering remarkable advancements in culture, learning and opportunity for all in this city, state and nation.”
