Martin University announced that President Sean L. Huddleston will step down from his role effective Nov. 28, 2025.
According to a statement released by the university, Huddleston’s decision to leave is voluntary and comes with the full support of the university’s Board of Trustees, which praised his leadership during a period of significant growth and change.
Huddleston has led the university since 2019, guiding it through challenges with what Board Chair Joseph Perkins described as “integrity, courage and vision.” Perkins credited Huddleston with playing a crucial role in stabilizing and growing the institution.

“Over the past six years, he has worked tirelessly to secure the university’s stability and growth, often against the odds,” Perkins said. “We are deeply grateful for his contributions, and he leaves with our admiration, appreciation and full support.”
During his tenure, Huddleston oversaw initiatives focused on academic innovation, student-centered programming and stronger community engagement. Under his leadership, Martin University strengthened its mission to provide inclusive and transformative education.
Huddleston’s departure marks the end of a pivotal era for the university. The Board of Trustees said he leaves behind a legacy of resilience and visionary leadership that will continue to shape the institution’s future. In the coming weeks, the Board of Trustees will share plans for interim leadership and a national search for Huddleston’s successor. Perkins emphasized that the university’s commitment to its students and mission will remain strong throughout the transition.

“Martin University’s mission has never been more important,” Perkins said. “With the groundwork Dr. Huddleston has laid, the university is well positioned to enter this next chapter with strength, stability and purpose.”
Looking ahead, the university will launch a Virtual Campus in January 2026. This initiative aims to expand access and flexibility for students while continuing to prioritize career-connected learning and community partnerships. Founded in 1977, Martin University is Indiana’s only Predominantly Black Institution of higher education. Its mission centers on educating and preparing diverse, workforce-ready students in a supportive, inclusive environment.
